An Evening of Song and Dance in Celebration of Lucy Broadwood

July 22, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

This concert is being held to celebrate Lucy Broadwood’s important and enduring legacy to the world of music, and to raise funds for the restoration her grave in Rusper Churchyard.
The performers will be:

Martyn Wyndham-Read and Iris Bishop (song with guitar/concertina/accordion accompaniment) . Martyn is a former resident of Lyne Estate, and has been a well known and admired performer on the British and Australian folk scenes since the 1960s, Iris plays both accordion and duet concertina, and is well known for her work with Martyn and with Elsie’s Band.

NB You might want to search on Youtube for ‘A Turtledove Pilgrimage’ with scenes of Rusper and related to the folk song tradition.

Harriet Sproule (singer).
Although the youngest of the performers, Harriet has performed in public since her early childhood as a singer in the annual performances of “Maypoles to Mistletoe” in Crawley and Guildford.

Carolyn Robson and Moira Craig (a cappella harmony duo)

Carolyn and Moira are both respected solo singers. For a number of years they were both members of a successful harmony trio, Craig Morgan and Robson, alongside the late and much missed singer Sarah Morgan. Since her death they have continued to sing as a harmony duo. Carolyn is a native of Northumberland and Moira hails from Scotland, but both have been resident well south of those areas for some time.

Irene Shettle (unaccompanied singer and Lucy Broadwood researcher)
Irene has been performing as an unaccompanied singer in public for over 20 years, and in 2000 won the annual singing competition at the National Folk Music Festival. Since 2004 she has been undertaking research into the life and work of Lucy Broadwood, and has since presented many shows and talks on her chosen subject, both as a solo singer and in company with the late Ralph Jordan as accompanist.

Dick Streeter (singer and Morris dancer) and Broadwood Morris Men
Broadwood Morris were formed over 40 years ago, and were given permission to use the Broadwood name by Lucy’s nephew, Captain Evelyn Broadwood. They perform in and around the Horsham area of West Sussex, and perform the Rusper Mummer’s play in Rusper on Boxing Day every year. They also form an important part of the show “Maypoles to Mistletoe” (performed in Crawley and Guildford at Christmas each year) along with other performers appearing in the concert.
