Rarest of the liturgical colours seen in church, red symbolises lifeblood and fire. Blood in Biblical parlance speaks of that which unites humanity as one family and unites Christian with Jesus who shares our flesh and blood. Fire has divine symbolism in many faiths. The church is dressed in red and red vestments worn on the feasts of Palm Sunday when we celebrate the coming of Christ among his people as King. Red plumage adorns the church again when we celebrate the coming of Jesus’ Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
